FREDERICTON (GNB) – Nova Scotia’s independent Serious Incident Response Team (SiRT) has concluded there are no grounds for criminal charges related to an incident in Oromocto, where a girl jumped from an overpass. This investigation was undertaken at the request of Justice and Public Safety through a memorandum of understanding.
On May 9, around 10 p.m., a 13-year-old girl who was a temporary ward of the Province escaped from a supervised residence. She made her way to an overpass that crosses the Trans-Canada Highway and climbed to the outer side of the railing. Based on the girl’s history, a witness called 911.
An RCMP officer responded and tried to convince the girl not to jump. As the officer approached, the girl let go of the railing. The officer grabbed her wrist but could not hold on and the girl fell, suffering several injuries.
The report concludes the officer was not at fault and commended the officer’s efforts to save the girl.
“Absolutely nothing criminal in nature occurred that night. Therefore, there are no grounds for any charges,” according to the report.
