Government of New Brunswick

Under the Clean Air Act, the Minister of the Environment in collaboration with the Minister of Health and Community Service can issue an Order to establish a new air quality objective or to amend an existing one.

Air quality objectives can be expressed either in numerical terms (a number related to a specific contaminant) or in narrative terms (achieving a specific air management goal).

The Minister of the Environment and Climate Change and the Minister of Health are required to notify the public of any intentions to establish or amend an air quality objective and to provide the general public and other interested parties an opportunity to comment prior to the establishment or amendment of any objective.

New Brunswick’s current air quality objectives are established as Maximum Permissible Ground Level Concentrations for key air contaminants, and are listed in Schedules B and C of the Air Quality Regulation.
