Overview

Successful completion of the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) and/or the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) is a prerequisite for a Possession and Acquisition Licence (PAL).

Eligibility

Individuals age 12 or older, and not currently prohibited from possessing firearms are eligible to participate in the Canadian Firearms Safety Course.

Individuals age 18 or older, and not currently prohibited from possessing firearms are eligible to participate in the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course.

All Firearms Safety Training Course students must successfully pass a written and practical exam.

If a court has prohibited an individual from possessing firearms, the individual must wait until the prohibition order has expired, then take the course and pass the written and practical tests before applying for a PAL, even if the individual had met the safety-training requirements prior to being prohibited.

The Canadian Firearms Safety Course (CFSC) and Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (CRFSC) are national firearm safety training courses that are available across Canada.

In New Brunswick, the Canadian Firearms Safety Course (non-restricted firearms) is delivered on behalf of the Provincial Firearms Office by the Department of Natural Resources and Energy Development.

The Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course is delivered by the Provincial Firearms Office.

Fee for the Canadian Restricted Firearms Safety Course (classroom instructions and testing) is $65.00.
