NIAGARA (GNB) – Team New Brunswick claimed three medals in track and field today at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara.

Para athlete Christel Robichaud, of Grande-Digue, and Craig Thorne, of Quispamisis, each struck gold at the Brock University track and field stadium Saturday. Thorne won the 110 metre hurdles to claim his medal, setting a new Canada Games record. Robichaud mined gold in the women’s para discus event to earn her second medal of these Canada Summer Games. Robichaud also claimed a gold medal earlier this week in the female para shot put.

Their gold medal performances have earned Thorne and Robichaud the honour of being Team New Brunswick’s flag-bearers for Sunday’s closing ceremonies in Niagara Falls.

Samuel Bourque, of Notre-Dame, claimed a silver medal today in the men’s discus for his second medal of the Canada Games. He won silver in the men’s shot put on Friday.

The track and field team’s three-medal performance gives Team New Brunswick’s athletes 19 medals (four gold, six silver and nine bronze) in the standings at the Games.

Team New Brunswick faces a small competition schedule prior to Sunday’s closing ceremonies.

The men’s four in rowing competes in the A final at Port Dalhousie’s Royal Henley Rowing Course, while the women’s double, women’s four, women’s eight and the men’s lightweight double compete in their respective B finals.

Sunday’s placement games are set for the women’s and men’s volleyball team, women’s soccer team and men’s box lacrosse. The lacrosse team faces off against Nova Scotia for fifth place after defeating Manitoba 4-3.

The women’s soccer team will play British Columbia for fifth place, after defeating Prince Edward Island 4-3 today.

The men’s and women’s volleyball teams each play for seventh place against Newfoundland and Labrador and Nova Scotia, respectively.

The road cycling competition came to a close with the criterium taking place at Brock University. Florence Levesque, of Dieppe, placed 12th in the women’s event followed by Laurence Arseneau, of Moncton, and Emilie McIntyre, of Memramcook, who placed 23rd and 24th respectively.

In the men’s road cycling event, Pascal LeBlanc, of Notre-Dame de Kent, placed 23rd followed by Noah Lydon, of Fredericton, Maxime Ouellette, of Grand Falls, and Colby Sirois, of Grand Falls, placing 26th, 34th, and 40^th, respectively.

Sailing finished Saturday at the Niagara-on-the-Lake sailing club with Morgan Haslett, of Saint John, placing seventh overall in the last radial female event. Connor Sullivan, of Saint John, placed ninth in the laser male event.

The golf competition also wrapped up Saturday with Team New Brunswick placing eighth overall at the Canada Summer Games with Julien Babineau, of Dieppe and Jacob Rockwood, of Quispamsis, finishing 10th and 17th overall. In women’s play Callie Taylor, of Quispamsis and Addison McClune, of Rothesay, placed 12th and 16th overall in the women’s category.

The closing ceremonies will take place Sunday evening at Queen Victoria Park in Niagara.
