NIAGARA (GNB) – Team New Brunswick claimed two medals in track and field today at the 2022 Canada Summer Games in Niagara.

Samuel Bourque, of Notre-Dame, claimed a silver medal in the men’s shot put and Jarod Manuel, of Baie-Sainte-Anne, won a bronze medal in the hammer throw.

In the 100m wheelchair, Dante Cormier, of Moncton, came within less than one second of grabbing the bronze medal.

In addition, the women’s 4 x 100m relay team, consisting of Shelby MacIsaac, of Riverview, Carys Jacobson and Tavia Salkey, both of Fredericton, and Caroline Gagnon, of Moncton, smashed the provincial record with a time of 46.78 seconds, finishing fifth overall.

The track and field team’s two-medal performance day gives Team New Brunswick’s athletes 16 medals (two gold, five silver and nine bronze) in the standings at the games as they enter the final weekend of the competition.

The track and field athletes return to competition Saturday, including Christel Robichaud, of Grande-Digue, who will compete in the women’s para discus. Robichaud claimed a gold medal Tuesday in the female para shot put.  

Men’s lacrosse doubled Prince Edward Island 8-4 in Friday’s morning match for the right to play host Team Ontario in a quarter final match later Friday evening. The host defeated New Brunswick 15-1.

In volleyball, both the men’s and women’s teams won their respective matches Friday. The women defeated Prince Edward Island 3-1 and will face Manitoba Saturday. The men play host Ontario Saturday after beating Yukon 3-0 Friday.

Rowing, women’s soccer and road cycling return to competition Saturday.

Cyclists will participate in their respective Criterium races Saturday afternoon around the campus of Brock University.

The soccer team faces off against Prince Edward Island Saturday to determine which opponent they will face in Sunday’s game.

Rowers Ethan Higgins Watson, of Saint John and Angus Oxley, of Rothesay, will participate in Saturday’s A Final men’s pair, while the women’s lightweight double and men’s quad participate in their respective B finals.

The final round of golf for Team New Brunswick’s Julien Babineau, of Dieppe, Jacob Rockwood, of Quispamsis, Callie Taylor, of Quispamsis, and Addison McClune, of Rothesay, will take place Saturday. The team sits tied for eighth as they enter the final day of golf competition.
