FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Social Development Minister Dorothy Shephard:

Every year, Nov. 29 is a special day for youth and children in care to be proud of their achievements and to look forward to a future of opportunity. The day was officially proclaimed in 2014 in partnership with New Brunswick Youth In Care Network.

The network provides opportunities for children and youth who are, or who were, in care to share their voices and influence change while creating opportunities for connection and support.

Although they have been confronted with challenges in their young lives, many children and youth in care will grow to become outstanding examples of resilience and determination with success in school, sports and various other activities. Many of these young people are an inspiration to others. The Department of Social Development is pleased to provide them with services and support to help them strive and succeed.

For the first time since the beginning of the pandemic, children and youth in care and their families will be able to have celebrations in person. They will gather at public pools, arcades, bowling alleys and other locations across the province for a day of fun.

I thank our foster families, group home staff and social workers who help organize these celebratory events. I would also like to thank our numerous partners who work with our children and youth to help them achieve the future they deserve.

Together we can continue to support them and help them become active participants in the future development of our province.
