FREDERICTON (GNB) – The following statement was issued today by Social Development Minister Dorothy Shephard to recognize November as Adoption Awareness Month:

Each year, New Brunswick families provide a sense of belonging, security and unconditional love to children and youth by choosing to adopt.

Adoption is much more than a legal process. Adopting a child is a lifelong commitment, and we are appreciative that so many families have made this commitment.

We celebrate Adoption Awareness Month so we can thank these families for their dedication and express appreciation for the hard-working staff who help our children and youth in care find loving families.

Thank you for everything you do to support the future of our province.

As we move forward with making New Brunswick a better place for our children, I want to acknowledge the work that is continuing with the Child and Youth Well-Being Act introduced in June.

This legislation is putting youth and children at the centre of our work and giving them a chance to voice their thoughts and concerns.

With this, and our continued partnership with groups like the New Brunswick Adoption Foundation, we will continue to create opportunities for children in care.

It is important to remember there are still nearly 650 children in New Brunswick waiting to be adopted into permanent, nurturing and loving families. There is an ongoing need for families like this to open their hearts and homes to our children and youth.
