OROMOCTO (GNB) – The federal, provincial and municipal governments announced funding today for upgrades to infrastructure at the Kings Arrow Arena, Gateway Wetland Trail, and Deer Park in the Town of Oromocto.

“Our communities and families thrive when they have community spaces that promote physical activity and social interaction,” said Service New Brunswick Minister Mary Wilson. “In addition, our population and economic growth are closely linked to the vitality of communities in the province, like Oromocto.”

Wilson spoke on behalf of Réjean Savoie, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

The funding will allow the town to repair and upgrade the roof at the arena, increase accessibility of the trail, improve signage at the Visitor Information Centre, and add a disc golf course to the park.

“Updating and improving recreational infrastructure contributes to the vitality and vibrancy of our communities,” said Fredericton MP Jenica Atwin. “Today’s investment in the Town of Oromocto will encourage residents and tourists to fully engage in what this community has to offer.”

Atwin attended for federal Rural Economic Development Minister Gudie Hutchings, who is also minister responsible for the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

The provincial government is providing $59,716 to the projects through the Regional Development Corporation and the federal government is contributing $99,543 through ACOA.

“We are very pleased to have partnered with ACOA to enhance a number of existing facilities for our residents and visitors,” said Oromocto Mayor Robert Powell. “This program has enabled the town to specifically enhance its accessibility to the Gateway wetlands for those with mobility issues and create an interpretive centre where visitors can learn more about the natural and cultural aspects of our community. In addition, safety upgrades to the King’s Arrow Arena have been made possible and the town has been able to develop a disc-golf course at Deer Park.”
