TRACADIE (GNB) – A $13.2 million investment in clean water infrastructure was announced by three levels of government today for the northern communities of Tracadie and Rivière-du-Nord.

“Investments in this critical infrastructure will benefit residents and support growth in these communities,” said Réjean Savoie, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “We are pleased to work with the municipalities of Tracadie and Rivière-du-Nord to help fund these projects.”

In Tracadie, funding will support Phase 2 of a multi-phased project to renew aging sanitary sewer, water and storm sewer mains on Principale Street. Additionally, about 110 metres of road will be restored with the construction of a new bike path.

In Rivière-du-Nord, funding will support the construction of a new sanitary sewer system and drinking water system on Des Acadiens Boulevard and Du Pont Street.

“The Acadian Peninsula is currently undergoing a remarkable renewal thanks to the arrival of new businesses and residents,” said federal Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Dominic LeBlanc. “Through investments like the ones we are announcing today, our government continues to be there to support its growth and ensure the region’s residents can benefit from a great quality of life.”

The province is investing $4,387,978 in these projects, while the federal government is contributing $7,676,795. Tracadie is contributing $296,513 and Rivière-du-Nord is contributing $803,966.

“Trails for active transportation and a footbridge over the Petit-Tracadie River will promote healthier lifestyles,” said Denis Losier, mayor of the Regional Municipality of Tracadie. “These major investments will strategically improve the connectivity of the Véloroute de la Péninsule acadienne and promote active transportation while strengthening accessibility within our regional municipality. By investing in our municipal infrastructure, the Government of Canada is helping to grow the economy of our regions and, in doing so, is also contributing to building more resilient communities.”

“For the town of Rivière-du-Nord, and more specifically for this sector of Bertrand, this project represents an improvement that will ensure the quality of drinking water and adequate wastewater treatment for the residents concerned, thanks to the support of the various levels of government,” said Joseph Lanteigne, mayor of the Town of Rivière-du-Nord. “For our municipality, in addition to encouraging residential and commercial development, this is a first in terms of water treatment infrastructure.”
