DOAKTOWN (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments announced funding today to support an accessible recreation and fitness centre in the heart of Doaktown.

“This project is a great addition to the village,” said Réjean Savoie, minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “Recreation and fitness facilities are an important part of keeping residents of every age healthy and of keeping the community vibrant and sustainable.”

A combined $453,618 will allow the village to adapt and renovate a vacant building to create the centre.

The provincial government is investing $226,809 through the Regional Development Corporation and the federal government is contributing $226,809 through the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA).

“Strong, vibrant communities in New Brunswick are a critical part of a robust and inclusive economic recovery,” said Ginette Petitpas Taylor, minister of Official Languages and minister responsible for ACOA. “Investing in shared spaces like the Village of Doaktown’s community wellness and fitness centre helps revitalize local economies and gives residents a place to come together safely.”

“Conveniently located in the centre of Doaktown, this facility will be an excellent resource for all residents, including newcomers to our area and anyone with accessible needs,” said Mayor Caroline St-Pierre Taylor. “We are thankful to our government funding partners, ACOA and the Regional Development Corporation, for their financial support for this project and to our corporate sponsor, J.D. Irving, Ltd., for their generous contribution. The village expresses our gratitude to Coun. Art O’Donnell, who has worked diligently from day one to bring this project to fruition.
