WOODSTOCK (GNB) – The provincial government is matching the municipal contribution for a combined $700,000 in upgrades to the town square in Woodstock.

“This redevelopment will help revitalize Woodstock’s downtown core,” said Public Safety Minister Bill Hogan. “There was a strong community desire to see this space upgraded and the provincial government is pleased to be a funding partner in a project that will support both social and economic growth.”

Hogan spoke on behalf of Environment and Climate Change Minister Gary Crossman, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation.

The project includes removing and replacing the old concrete and brick in the square to create a modern and safe gathering place.

“Today’s announcement marks the next critical step in the revitalization of our downtown core,” said Woodstock Mayor Arthur Slipp. “Our recent municipal plan determined that infrastructure upgrades would be required to ensure that the central business district remained vibrant and strong. The town square, adjacent to the Meduxnekeag River Greenway, also serves as an important venue for many of our social and cultural events. This project will integrate both public spaces to form a modern, attractive location for future commercial and entertainment events.”

The provincial government and the town will each invest $350,000 in the project.

It will not only address the safety concerns of the deteriorating concrete and brick work but will also ensure better accessibility for the public, create a welcoming and inviting community gathering space where we can host events, and help all downtown businesses by attracting local residents and tourists alike,” said John Thompson, president of Downtown Woodstock. “The Downtown Woodstock Business Improvement Association and our members have participated in the design phase and welcome this major improvement to our community.”
