TRACADIE (GNB) – Provincial, federal and municipal officials announced almost $12 million in funding today for wastewater improvement projects in Tracadie, Caraquet and Lamèque.

“Reliable infrastructure is key to building stronger communities,” said Environment and Climate Change Minster Gary Crossman, who is also minister responsible for the Regional Development Corporation. “Investing in these projects will provide more sustainable solutions for wastewater treatment and will help prepare these communities for future growth.”

The funding will support the renewal of storm and sewer lines on Principale Street in Tracadie and prepare the street to be rebuilt.

In Caraquet, the funding will assist with upgrades to the Landry Street Lagoon to reduce the size of the lagoon, increase the depth, repair dikes, add a synthetic membrane to seal the lagoon and install additional controls.

In Lamèque, the funding will support wastewater infrastructure upgrades.

“Investments in infrastructure are investments in strong and sustainable communities. Our government’s investment in wastewater infrastructure will support an efficient and sustainable future for the residents of Tracadie, Caraquet and Lamèque,” said Acadie-Bathurst MP Serge Cormier. “We are committed to building a greener and brighter future for the next generation of New Brunswickers.”

Cormier attended for federal Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities Minister Dominic LeBlanc.

The provincial government is investing $1.3 million in Tracadie, $1 million in Caraquet and $1.7 million in Lamèque through the Regional Development Corporation. The federal government is providing more than $4.5 million for these projects through the Green Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program. The three municipalities are providing more than $2.9 million in combined funding.

“Building together, an essential commitment! Investing in infrastructure strengthens the economy, creates jobs and builds our community,” said Tracadie Mayor Denis Losier. “Effective asset management is the cornerstone to ensure investments are made on time to minimize future repair costs.”

“The Town of Caraquet is pleased with the collaboration between the federal and provincial governments as it allows us to keep our wastewater infrastructure in good condition,” said Caraquet Mayor Bernard Thériault.
