FREDERICTON (GNB) – Peace officers with the Department of Justice and Public Safety recently seized contraband cigarettes and illegal liquor in the Campbellton area and arrested three men in three separate incidents.
A 49-year-old man from Beresford was arrested with charges pending under the Tobacco Tax Act and the Criminal Code after officers seized more than 13,000 contraband cigarettes.
The tobacco seized has a provincial tax value of $3,318.11 and a federal excise tax value of $2,058.48.
In two other incidents, officers arrested a 47-year-old Saint John man and a 61-year-old Escuminac man. Charges are pending under the Liquor Control Act for allegedly transporting liquor across provincial boundaries. Officers seized 64 cases of beer with 30 cans per case.
The investigations are ongoing.
The sale of contraband tobacco and illegal liquor removes tax revenues that support government programs. The trafficking of contraband cigarettes supports the underground economy and organized crime.
