FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government has launched a Disaster Financial Assistance program to help individuals, small businesses, not-for-profit organizations, and local governments that suffered property damage following heavy rainfall on June 29.

There was significant damage in the Edmundston region. Up to 70 mm of rain fell in less than an hour. There are reports of flooded residences and businesses, and damage to roads.

The Disaster Financial Assistance program helps with eligible damage and losses that threaten the health and safety of individuals, local governments and small businesses.

The program is not a replacement for insurance. It will assist in covering only the basic costs of essential items. Camps, cottages, boats, cars and trailers are not eligible. Residents should contact their insurance provider for details about their coverage.

“We are announcing the assistance program now so people, businesses and communities can make plans to recover,” said Public Safety Minister Kris Austin. “I commend local government leaders, first responders and all involved for their quick actions. Their efforts played a big role in keeping everyone safe.”

Details regarding how to apply for disaster financial assistance will be announced next week. Until then residents are reminded to:

  • Contact their insurance companies immediately to report damage.
  • Take photos of damage to their homes or properties.
  • Keep receipts of any repairs and replacement purchases.
  • Log the number of hours of work undertaken for residents who are cleaning their own properties, or family members or those who have assisted in the cleanup of their property.
