FREDERICTON (GNB) – Residents of New Brunswick are reminded to have an emergency plan and an emergency preparedness kit that can meet their needs for at least three days now that hurricane season has begun.

“Everyone should have a plan in place to protect their family and property,” said Public Safety Minister Kris Austin. “This hurricane season, I encourage every New Brunswicker to pay close attention to forecasts, follow warnings and be prepared for prolonged power outages.”

Residents should consider the types of emergencies that could affect their family and community. The risks vary by region. Natural disasters such as forest fires, hurricanes, storms and flooding, as well as unexpected incidents such as train derailments and power outages, can occur at any time.

A basic emergency kit should contain the following:

  • At least two litres of water per person, per day, for a minimum of 72 hours.
  • Food that won’t spoil, such as canned goods, energy bars and dried food.
  • Cash, debit and credit cards.
  • Batteries.
  • Insurance information.
  • A manual can opener.
  • Crank or battery-powered flashlights and radio.
  • A first aid kit.
  • Extra keys to your vehicle(s) and home.
  • A copy of your emergency plan and contact information.
  • If applicable, other items such as prescription medications, infant formula, pet food, and equipment for people with special needs (personalize accordingly).

A 72-hour booklet is available online and contains useful information to help families prepare an emergency kit and family emergency plan.

The Emergency Measures Organization co-ordinates preparedness for emergencies. It also co-ordinates provincial response operations during emergencies and administers disaster financial assistance programs during recovery. It works at the provincial, regional and municipal levels to ensure that communities are protected during all phases of an emergency.
