FREDERICTON (GNB) – More than 831,000 contraband cigarettes believed to be destined for New Brunswick were seized in Quebec on May 30 by the Sûreté du Québec.

A man was arrested and will appear in court later. The investigation is ongoing.

“The inspection and enforcement branch of the department has developed partnerships with the Sûreté du Québec and regularly collaborate on active files. They share intelligence as well as investigative and enforcement resources,” said Public Safety Minister Kris Austin. “Contraband tobacco is a problem across the country, so it is refreshing to see agencies from different jurisdictions work together to address it.”

Residents are encouraged to report the trafficking of contraband tobacco, or any other criminal matter, to law enforcement. Information can be shared with the Department of Justice and Public Safety by calling 1-877-826-2122 or it can also be provided anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477), by downloading the secure P3 Mobile App, or by Secure Web Tips at www.crimenb.ca.
