FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Department of Justice and Public Safety, with the assistance of other law enforcement agencies, recently seized more than 185,000 contraband cigarettes.

On April 5, in collaboration with the Bathurst Police Force and the Integrated Enforcement Unit, department peace officers seized 96,800 contraband cigarettes.

The cigarettes were found after a vehicle believed to be transporting contraband tobacco was stopped. The vehicle was also seized. Two people were arrested and released on conditions. They will appear in Bathurst Provincial Court at a later date. The investigation is ongoing.

On April 6, in collaboration with the Bathurst Police Force and Sûreté du Québec, staff seized 88,285 contraband cigarettes.

The cigarettes were found after three vehicles believed to be transporting contraband tobacco were stopped. Three people were arrested and released on conditions. They will appear in Bathurst Provincial Court at a later date. The investigation is ongoing.
