FREDERICTON (GNB) – Scott Brittain has been appointed as a sitting provincial court judge in Miramichi, Justice Minister Hugh J. Flemming announced today.

“During his career, Mr. Brittain has made an important contribution to the legal community of New Brunswick,” said Flemming. “We are confident his expertise and professionalism will serve him well in his new role.”

Brittain obtained his law degree from the University of New Brunswick (UNB), was called to the bar in 2004 and earned his master of law from the University of Cambridge in 2005. He earned the Queen’s counsel designation in 2018. Prior to his appointment as judge, Brittain was a senior solicitor with NB Power and was previously a solicitor for the City of Saint John. He has also been a part-time instructor with the Faculty of Law at UNB. Brittain was president of the Canadian Bar Association’s New Brunswick branch from 2016 to 2017 and was president of the Law Society of New Brunswick from 2019 to 2020.

The appointment fills a vacancy and brings the number of full-time provincial court judges to 23, including the chief judge and the associate chief judge. There are also nine supernumerary judges and three per diem judges.

All applications for appointment to the provincial court are assessed by the provincial judicial appointment review advisors who represent the bench, the bar and the general public. The advisors consider the professional and other qualifications of each candidate in carrying out their assessments. The appointment process also includes interviews by a committee composed of the chief justice of New Brunswick, the chief judge and the associate chief judge of the provincial court, one of the provincial judicial appointment review advisors representing the general public and a senior member of the bar.
