FREDERICTON (GNB) – A new resource, the Public Safety Crime Dashboard, has been posted online to provide the public with increased access to statistics regarding crimes reported to police in the province.

The site uses data from Statistics Canada and has been designed to provide access to the information in an interactive and user-friendly format.

“Keeping people informed is key to having them engaged in issues that matter to them and their communities,” said Justice and Public Safety Minister Hugh J. Flemming. “Community leaders and members of the public have told us they want more access to information about crime in their areas. This is one way we are working to provide increased insight.”

The dashboard provides details on reported crimes which occurred over the past five years in New Brunswick. It also displays the number of incidents cleared by charge or otherwise, and the clearance rates.

Incidents can be broken down by categories of crime, or by police forces or RCMP detachments, or by specific years.

The site also provides a summary of the Crime Severity Index for New Brunswick, the other Atlantic provinces and Canada. These rates can also be broken down by violent and non-violent crimes.

“Providing communities with details about crime rates in their area will improve the overall understanding of police-reported crimes, improve transparency and enhance confidence through the creation and use of open data in New Brunswick,” Flemming said.
