FREDERICTON (GNB) – Public Health reported today that since July 1, there have been 340 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in New Brunswick. Of those, 303 or 89 per cent, were people who were not fully vaccinated.

“There are still many people in New Brunswick who need to get vaccinated as quickly as possible,” said Dr. Cristin Muecke, deputy chief medical officer of health. “The risk is proven to be far lower when you are vaccinated. It protects you, the people you love and your community. The virus is present in all areas of the province and you may not always be aware if you have been exposed. If you have symptoms you should assume you have COVID and get tested, especially if you are not fully vaccinated.”

Vaccination update

As of today, 72.7 per cent of New Brunswickers aged 12 and older are fully vaccinated and 84 per cent have received their first dose of a COVID-19 vaccine.

If you have not yet had your first or second dose, you are asked to go to a walk-in clinic or to book an appointment through a participating pharmacy or at a Vitalité or Horizon health network clinic as soon as possible.

All eligible New Brunswickers can book their second-dose appointments now for a date that is at least 28 days after their first dose. To receive a second dose, bring a signed consent form, your Medicare card and a copy of the record of immunization provided after receiving your first dose.

58 new cases

Public Health reported 58 new cases of COVID-19 since Saturday. Of those, 85 per cent were not fully vaccinated.

The 30 new cases in Zone 1 (Moncton region) are as follows:

  • 11 people 19 and under;
  • five people 20-29;
  • seven people 30-39;
  • one person 40-49;
  • two people 50-59: and
  • four people 60-69.

Twenty-one cases are contacts of previously confirmed cases, two are travel-related and seven are under investigation.

The four cases in Zone 2 (Saint John region) are as follows:

  • one person 19 and under;
  • one person 30-39; and
  • two people 40-49.

All four cases are contacts of previously confirmed cases.

The 16 cases in Zone 3 (Fredericton region) are as follows:

  • eight people 19 and under;
  • three people 20-29;
  • one person 30-39;
  • two people 40-49;
  • one person 50-59; and
  • one person 90 and over.

Seven of the cases are contacts of previously confirmed cases, six are travel-related and three are under investigation.

There is one case in Zone 4 (Edmundston area) of an individual 40-49 who is a contact of a previously confirmed case.

There is one case in Zone 6 (Bathurst region) of an individual 20-29 and that case is under investigation.

The six cases in Zone 7 (Miramichi region) are as follows:

  • two people 19 and under;
  • one person 50-59;
  • two people 60-69; and
  • one person 80-89.

Four cases are contacts of a previously confirmed case, one is travel related and one is under investigation.

The number of confirmed cases in New Brunswick is 2,672. There have been 37 recoveries since Aug. 20 for a total of 2,452 recoveries. There have been 46 deaths and the number of active cases is 173. Three patients are hospitalized in New Brunswick. A total of 2,244 tests were conducted since Aug. 20 for a total of 400,152.

Outbreak declared at Southeast Regional Correctional Centre

Public Health has declared an outbreak of COVID-19 at the Southeast Regional Correctional Centre in Shediac. Following confirmation of one positive case on Aug. 20, all inmates and close contact staff were tested. There are four cases now confirmed, including both inmates and staff.

The Department of Justice and Public Safety is assigning staff from other centres to the Shediac facility as needed due to the requirement for some personnel to self-isolate.

The movement of inmates within the facility is being restricted and court appearances are being held through video conferences.

Walk-in vaccination clinics offering the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine, which is suitable for people 12 and older, are available today as follows:

  • Moncton Coliseum, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Sussex Legion, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Pennfield Lions Club, 6 p.m. to 7 p.m.

Walk-in vaccination clinics are available Tuesday, Aug. 24 as follows:

  • Woodstock, Ayr Motor Centre, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Oromocto, Hazen Park Centre, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.
  • Miramichi Exhibition Building, 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Petitcodiac, Royal Canadian Legion, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • Shippagan, Centre des congrès de la Péninsule acadienne (convention centre of the Acadian Peninsula), 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Potential public exposures

Anyone with symptoms of the virus, as well as anyone who has been at the site of a possible public exposure, is urged to request a test online or call Tele-Care 811 to get an appointment.
