Government of New Brunswick

Overview

In collaboration with NB Lung, NB public libraries lend free, short-term radon detection kits to help you assess the levels of radon in your home.

Eligibility

Radon detection kits can be borrowed for free by any New Brunswicker with a valid public library card.

Description

If you are curious or concerned about the level of radon present in your home, you can borrow a short-term radon detection kit to determine if further action is needed. Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas formed by decaying uranium underground. The energy released when the radon breaks down can damage lung cells and lead to cancer. Elevated radon levels can be fixed with proper screening and professional remediation.

The radon detection kits can be borrowed for six (6) weeks at a time. Due to their fragile nature, the kits cannot be mailed. They must therefore be picked up from and returned to your local library.

The kits are currently only available in some libraries. More will be added over the next few years. A list of the libraries that have a radon detection kit is available in our online catalogue.

For more information, contact us by email at [email protected] or consult with staff at your local public library.
