FREDERICTON (GNB) – A nurse practitioner clinic officially opened today in Keswick.

Located in the Keswick pharmacy, the new clinic will provide increased access to primary health care for area residents.

“Access to primary health care is fundamental to helping people manage their health conditions,” said Health Minister Dorothy Shephard. “This is another step in evolving our health-care system to one of team-based care where no matter where a person enters the system, they will be welcomed, accepted and connected to the right care they need.”

The clinic will be open from 8 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays until mid-June, after which it will be open the entire work week. The clinic will take on patients from the Patient Connect NB list who are without a family doctor or a nurse practitioner.

“Horizon is thrilled to be able to add a full-time nurse practitioner resource to the Keswick pharmacy as this will have an immediate impact on improving primary access for residents of the Fredericton area and rural York County,” said Jean Daigle, vice-president community for Horizon Health Network. “Nurse practitioners are skilled, versatile clinicians who are playing an invaluable role in helping connect patients to timely, high-quality primary health-care services in communities across our coverage area.”

Improving access to primary care is one of five action areas in New Brunswick’s Health Plan. Shephard said strong primary health care is critical to ensuring that people can get the heath care they need at the right time and in the right place by the right provider.
