FREDERICTON (GNB) – The provincial government will continue its rabies prevention program in western New Brunswick this spring.
“It is essential to prevent and control the spread of rabies in our province,” said Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Chief Veterinary Officer Dr. Nicole Wanamaker. “We must remain vigilant to prevent rabies from reaching domestic animals or humans. The program activities allow us to understand the situation and prevent spread.”
As part of the spring program, traps will be placed in the Beechwood area of Carleton County by provincial rangers from May 15 to June 2. Traps may be placed on private property. Animals caught in the traps will be tested for rabies.
Residents are advised not to disturb the traps and encouraged to be extra vigilant in controlling their pets during this time to avoid any accidental captures of pets.
New Brunswickers are also urged to take steps to protect themselves, their families, their pets and livestock from rabies by keeping a safe distance from wildlife, refraining from relocating wildlife, ensuring the vaccinations of pets and livestock are up to date, and seeking medical attention promptly if they have been bitten or scratched by an animal that could potentially be rabid.
