FREDERICTON (GNB) – Hunters in New Brunswick now have additional safety clothing options available to them.

Amendments have been made to the Hunter Orange Regulation under the Fish and Wildlife Act and the General Regulation under the Provincial Offences Procedure Act, allowing hunters to wear camouflage blaze orange items, as well as the traditional hunter orange, when hunting in the province.

“Hunters asked us to look at the rules around hunting clothing options and align them with the requirements in other provinces,” said Natural Resources and Energy Development Minister Mike Holland. “We listened to those requests and we acted on them, giving hunters more choices and helping them to participate while remaining safe.”

From Sept. 1 to Dec. 31, hunters, fur harvesters carrying a firearm, and licensed guides must wear a solid or camouflage hunter orange jacket or vest and a hat of solid fluorescent orange. Jackets, vests and hats must be visible from all directions.

Exempt from this requirement are licensed bow and crossbow hunters during the deer archery season, once they are in a tree stand or ground blind, and waterfowl hunters.

High-visibility clothing helps make hunting as safe as possible for participants. Hunters are reminded that there are many people participating in other forms of outdoor work and recreation during the hunting seasons who are not required to wear high-visibility garments.
