FREDERICTON (GNB) – New Brunswick's 2018 Firearm Safety / Hunter Education Instructors of the Year Awards were presented today during a ceremony at the Hugh John Flemming Forestry Centre in Fredericton.

Four instructors received International Hunter Education Association prints in recognition of their commitment, subject matter expertise and teaching ability.

Gilles Sonier, region 1 (Bathurst), has taught 779 students during 37 courses in Firearms Safety and Hunter Education since earning his instructor certification in 2009.

Jeannot Coté, region 2 (Moncton), has taught 2,661 students during 111 courses in Firearms Safety and Hunter Education since earning his instructor certification in 2005.

Wendall Van Horne, region 3 (Taymouth), has taught 1,168 students during 60 courses in Firearms Safety and Hunter Education since earning his instructor certification in 1994.

Aurèle Soucy, region 4 (Saint-Léonard), has taught 930 students during 45 courses in Firearms Safety and Hunter Education since earning his instructor certification in 1994.

More than 5,500 students have benefited from these instructors’ expertise and commitment to the Conservation Education Program.

New Brunswick has one of the lowest hunting accident rates in North America due in part to the work of hunter education instructors. Last year, 268 courses were offered, with 4,180 students participating in the program.
