SPRINGDALE (GNB) – The provincial and federal governments will invest a combined total of $4 million to improve Route 114, which serves as the main access road to Fundy National Park.

Transportation and Infrastructure Minister Bill Oliver and Fundy Royal MP Alaina Lockhart participated in today’s announcement.

“Road conditions can have an impact on the overall tourism experience of our visitors, and that is why we have prioritized improvements to this highway,” said Oliver. “We are pleased that the federal government is supporting our goal of maintaining and improving our existing infrastructure.”

The project will include the resurfacing of 18.7 kilometres of the road, from Route 1 toward the park.

“As we work to make sure our region is ready to take advantage of a growing tourism industry, safe and convenient roadways are key,” said Lockhart. “Local residents and businesses, as well as visitors, will benefit tremendously from improvements to Route 114. I am very pleased that both levels of government are coming together to make the roadway to Fundy National Park and beyond a strong link for local communities.”

Lockhart attended for federal Infrastructure and Communities Minister François-Philippe Champagne.

About seven kilometres will be resurfaced with asphalt, and the remainder will be resurfaced with chip seal. Culverts will also be replaced as required.

“Our government is focused on strengthening our position as a tourism destination and creating positive experiences for tourists,” said Tourism, Heritage and Culture Minister Robert Gauvin. “This project is just one part of the work we are doing to encourage people to visit the Bay of Fundy region.”

Provincial funding is provided through the Department of Transportation and Infrastructure’s $493-million capital budget, while federal funding comes from the Rural and Northern Infrastructure Stream of the Investing in Canada infrastructure plan.
