FREDERICTON (GNB) – The Department of Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries is investing $134,000 in an initiative that will help strengthen the local food supply chain in New Brunswick.

Kredl’s Corner Market in Hampton has received funding to lead a project working with local farmers across the province to build their network of buyers and connect these buyers to growers. The intent is to facilitate connections and build stronger supply chains so locally grown produce can be sold throughout the province on a larger scale, and year-round. The initial focus of the project will be on southern New Brunswick.

“This is an exciting opportunity to bring together the farmers who grow our food with the folks who can help get it on the tables of New Brunswickers,” said Agriculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries Minister Margaret Johnson. “This kind of co-ordination will certainly help with our government’s continued efforts to strengthen our food system and improve our food self-sufficiency.”

The initiative is the first to receive funding as part of a $1.5 million increase in the department’s 2021-22 budget to help improve food self-sufficiency.

“We are excited to play a role in connecting growers and producers in the province with customers,” said Blair Hyslop, co-owner of Kredl’s Corner Market. “This initiative is completely aligned with Kredl’s mission to help grow local food in the province.”

This project is in line with the department’s Local Food and Beverages Strategy 2021-2025. The four-year action plan aims to benefit the agriculture, agri-food and seafood sectors across the province and has three core pillars: Grow NB, Buy NB and Feed NB.
