Overview
On-site sewage disposal system installations, constructions, repairs and replacements require the approval of the Department of Justice and Public Safety's Technical Inspections Services branch.
You will be charged a fee for assessment and approval for the design and location of a proposed on-site sewage disposal system installation, construction, repair or replacement. Assessment is based on an audit-based inspection system.
Eligibility
Only licensed installers that are planning to install, construct, repair or replace an on-site sewage disposal system, or any part of, may submit an application and carry out this work.
Description
An on-site sewage disposal system consists of a septic tank and subsurface disposal field and is required on properties where no municipal sanitary sewer service is available. Department of Justice and Public Safety (JPS) Inspectors assess applications to install, construct, repair or replace on-site sewage disposal systems to ensure that proposed systems will not contaminate groundwater resources or cause health hazards. The system design and location, as well as soil conditions on the property, are evaluated to determine if sewage can be effectively disposed of and treated to prevent the spread of communicable disease.
Licensed installers may proceed with the installation, construction, repair and/or replacement of an on-site sewage disposal system only when the application has been assessed and approved by a JPS Inspector. Once this is complete, the work may be inspected and approved by a JPS Inspector depending on the audit-based inspection process. On-site sewage disposal systems that have not been installed, constructed, repaired or replaced in accordance with the approval issued or those that fail to meet the requirements of the On-site Sewage Disposal System Regulation 2009-137 or New Brunswick Technical Guidelines for On-site Sewage Disposal Systems must be corrected or modified and are subject to re-inspection. A re-inspection fee must be paid prior to the re-inspection being conducted.
Licensed installers may submit Part 1 of the Application to Install an On-Site Sewage Disposal System online via Service New Brunswick. Where this is the case, the licensed installer must submit the completed Part 2 of the same Application including design and location of the proposed on-site sewage disposal system directly to Technical Inspection Services at [email protected] before the application will be processed.
