FREDERICTON (GNB) – An inmate in the custody of the provincial correctional system has died.

Derek James Whalen, 37, an inmate at the Southeast Regional Correctional Centre was transported to the Moncton Hospital on May 3 where he was pronounced dead.

Whalen was being held on remand awaiting a court appearance.

The incident, including the cause of death, is being investigated by the RCMP and Coroner Services. Under a recent directive, coroner’s inquests will be held for all non-natural deaths in custody.

This information is being released in accordance with the Department of Public Safety's policy regarding the death of an inmate in the custody of the provincial correctional system.
