FREDERICTON (GNB) – The government announced today its intention to release audited financial statements for the 2017-18 fiscal year prior to the provincial election.

“Your government has a fiscal plan in place, and that plan is working,” said Treasury Board President Roger Melanson. “We have reduced the deficit by half while continuously meeting or exceeding our fiscal targets and investing in New Brunswickers’ priorities of health and education.”

In 2016, the government established an audit committee to meet and discuss significant audit matters. The committee was recommended in the Auditor General Report, Volume 3, 2015.

“We will continue to share our fiscal progress with New Brunswickers, and releasing the audited financial statements is a commitment priority of our audit committee,” said Melanson.

The Office of the Comptroller is working with the Office of the Auditor General to have the statements completed and published before the election. Specific timing of the release will be announced in the coming months.

In January, the Department of Finance projected a deficit of $115.2 million for 2017-18. This is an improvement of $76.7 million from the budgeted deficit. Revenue was projected to be $74.3 million higher than budgeted and expenditures were expected to be $2.4 million below budget.
