FREDERICTON (GNB) – Applications for the 2017 Low-Income Seniors' Benefit are now available.

“We are pleased to grant this benefit to vulnerable seniors who often need help with household expenses or other necessities,” said Finance Minister Cathy Rogers. “Each year, many seniors rely on this support to supplement their income and help them to cope with the long winter months in New Brunswick.”

To be eligible for the $400 benefit, a person must have been a resident of New Brunswick on Dec. 31, 2016, and have received one of the following federal benefits under the Old Age Security Act:

  • Guaranteed Income Supplement (65 years or older);
  • Allowance for Survivor Program (between 60 and 64 years old); or
  • Allowance Program (between 60 and 64 years old).

“This is one among several benefits to help reduce poverty and improve the quality of life for seniors,” said Rogers. “All eligible low-income seniors are encouraged to take advantage of this benefit that was created to improve their financial security.”

Applications are now available at Service New Brunswick centers and online at both the Department of Finance and Service New Brunswick websites. Completed applications may be returned to the Department of Finance, Revenue Administration Division, P.O. Box 1900, Fredericton, N.B., E3B 5G4. The last day to apply is Dec. 31.
