Child Care Sector Task Force

Our government is making early childhood development a priority because by ensuring the success of all sectors that work with young children, we will see future generations of New Brunswickers develop to their full potential.

In order to accomplish this, we must examine the child care system in New Brunswick.  We are pleased to have established the New Brunswick Child Care Sector Task force, tasked with making recommendations to establish favourable conditions for daycare services. It will also suggest solutions to the challenges faced by parents in accessing quality, affordable daycare services.  

The task force has completed the engagement process and we thank the parents, educators, and daycare operators for their suggestions, ideas, and comments.

By working closely together, we can ensure that New Brunswick families will benefit from a high quality child care system that will enable them to settle and stay here.

The Task Force was mandated to provide a path for creating the right conditions for quality child care that are accessible and affordable and that support parents’ participation in the workforce.

The Task Force will :

• Conduct consultations with parents, child care operators and educators and all partners
• Identify the challenges in accessing regulated child care services
• Determine the viability/profitability challenges of regulated child care
• Identify the exemplary practices and lessons learned that support quality child care that are affordable and accessible, here and in other jurisdictions, and how those could be replicated in New Brunswick
• Conduct a comprehensive analysis of the legislation regulating child cares linking to quality, children’s health and safety and viability
  

Many activities took place in the last months, including:

• Province-wide consultations between Commissioners and child care sector stakeholders (completed)
  
• Independent focus groups (completed)
• Submission of briefs (completed)

Pam Whitty: professor in early childhood education at the University of New Brunswick, she was instrumental in the development and implementation of the New Brunswick Early Learning and Care Curriculum Framework. She is also well known nationally and internationally in the field of early childhood education.

Corinne Haché: consultant and specialist in early childhood, with more than 34 years of experience in this area, she has held the positions of director of pre-school intervention services and administrative officer for a day care.
